The 2006 C.O.O.L. Idealist Awards

The deadline to apply has passed.

$500 Gift Certificates to Powell's Books will be presented to the winners!

The C.O.O.L. Idealist Awards recognize the excellence of individuals and campuses across the country who, by their commitment to student involvement in communities, have successfully brought the power and impact of youth civic engagement to the foreground of student, campus, and community life.

AWARD CATEGORIES:

Against the Odds Award (Student)
Many college students face adversity and challenges to exercising their full potential as leaders and agents for change. This award will go to a student who has overcome great personal or institutional barriers to serve his or her community and campus.

Seeds of Change Award (Student)
Social entrepreneurs — like C.O.O.L.'s founder, Wayne Meisel, and Idealist's founder, Ami Dar — have created lasting change through innovation and tenacity. This award will go to a student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership, creativity, and innovation, as s/he has started a new program or brought new life to an existing one.

Building Bridges Award (Campus)
Collaboration can be difficult, even among departments on the same campus. This award will go to a campus program that demonstrates exceptional leadership in the area of building strong collaborative relations on and/or across campuses and within the surrounding community, that lead to deeper and more dynamic programs.

Idealism in Action Award (Campus)
This award will go to a campus that has demonstrated depth and breadth in their commitment to civic engagement. The recipient of this award will be a campus that has shown commitment to community service, activism, service-learning, and socially responsible careers or that has made vast strides in doing so in the recent past. Applicants should use the requested essay below to include a description of the various campus initiatives and programs that show the campus' commitment to civic engagement.
