Governor Jeanne Shaheen
7:00p.m. in 208 Light Hall
Jeanne Shaheen, Director of the Harvard University Institute of Politics and Former Governor of the State of New
Hampshire
Born in St. Charles, MO in 1947, Jeanne Shaheen earned her Bachelor's in English from Shippensburg University in
Pennsylvania in 1969 before completing a Masters degree in Political Science at the University of Mississippi in 1973.
After teaching high school in Mississippi and New Hampshire, owning and managing a small business, and running several
statewide political campaigns, Shaheen was elected to the New Hampshire state senate in 1990, where she served three
terms. Taking on tough issues and skilled at coalition-building, she was an early champion and expert on bringing electric
competition to New Hampshire, reforming workers' compensation, improving the state's health care system, and expanding
the economy.
As the first female Governor of New Hampshire, Jeanne Shaheen worked to move the state forward while making sure
government lived within its means. She launched innovative initiatives to save taxpayers' money by lowering the cost of
prescription drugs for the state's Medicaid program; reducing worker's compensation costs; and spearheading an effort to
upgrade state buildings for energy efficiency.
We're pleased to welcome Governor Shaheen to Vanderbilt University, and encourage conference participants to attend her
lecture and a short reception afterward.

Picture This: A Fight to Save Joe
Directed by Dr. John P. McHale
Film Recipient of Voice of Conscience Award (WMCADP) and Peacemaker of the Year Award (MUPS)
This riveting documentary, narrated by Danny Glover, draws viewers into the public battle to stop the execution of Joe
Amrine, a Missouri man on death row for 17 years for a prison murder, despite there being neither witnesses nor evidence
against him. This documentary traces advocate efforts to save Joe's life; the production and exhibition of "Unreasonable
Doubt: The Joe Amrine Story" (a video documentary about Joe's case, trial, and torturous limbo); the public relations
battle to attract attention to Joe's plight; and the precedent-setting Supreme Court case that resulted from the admirable
efforts of an excellent and conscientious defense team. Influenced by "Thin Blue Line" (Errol Morris) with cinema
verite qualities of "Bowling for Columbine," the startling and inspiring end of this documentary reveals the empowering
potential of video, courageous legal representation, and the truth.

Murderball
Nominee for the 2006 Academy Award for "Best Documentary Feature"
Featuring a Q and A session with the vice president of Participant Productions
Murderball is a film about tough, highly competitive rugby players - quadriplegic rugby players. The athletes in
Murderball transcend any images of the disabled that one might conjure up, and their day-to-day lives, their successes
and failures on and off the court, are a continuous example of defying negative perceptions and stereotypes.
Murderball is a testament to the spirit of the players, their humanity, and the intensity of the game. But most of all, it is a
film about meeting life head-on and not giving up, even after your spirit - and your spine - has been crushed.
Are you ready to smash some stereotypes? Then Get Into the Game and host a screening of Murderball on your campus.
To get started, go to www.Participate.net to order your free copy of the movie.
