This was the best conference I have ever attended. This is not hyperbole. It was incredibly well thought out and the presenters I heard were all excellent. That's a first for me.

The number of attendees and diversity of organizations was great.

I am amazed that you were able to do everything for such a low cost to us.

It was worth every penny for the friendships, knowledge, and excitement gained from the full three days.

It's not often we get the opportunity to share our challenges and experiences with other nonprofit HR professionals… I am looking forward to attending another one!

Completely met and surpassed expectations. The conference logistics were great - the networking opportunities and the spirit of the conference were wonderful.

The Second National Conference for Nonprofit Human Resources

June 2-5, 2004 | The Portland Marriott Downtown, Portland, Oregon

PLEASE NOTE: This conference occurred in 2004. We have maintained the conference site as a memento of the event, but many of the links are disabled or lead to outdated pages. For information about our current HR programs, please visit the Nonprofit Human Resources Center.

Please join us at the second national conference to focus entirely on Nonprofit Human Resources.

The goals

This conference has three main goals:

  • To address the unique needs of HR staff in the nonprofit sector by allowing HR professionals to share knowledge, experience and ideas through a wide variety of workshops and panels.

  • To encourage networking and community-building among HR professionals working in the same geographic area or on similar issues.

  • To continue building a national network of HR professionals who can work together on issues of common concern.

Who should attend

With a wide variety of breakout sessions, the conference is designed for seasoned full-time HR professionals, as well as for Executive Directors or other staff at smaller nonprofits who must wear the HR hat among many others.

How we got here

The need for this conference came out of a series of focus groups we did in the summer of 2001 with over one hundred nonprofit HR professionals in seven cities across the country. The First National Nonprofit Human Resources Conference was held in June of 2003 in Philadelphia, and brought together 300 nonprofit HR professionals for over 50 breakout sessions. One of last year's attendees wrote:

I would like to reiterate my heartfelt thanks for the wonderful conference you hosted in Philadelphia. It was refreshing to get together with others focused in the human resources field, particularly dealing with nonprofit issues. The seminars alone were wonderful, but the time you took to add the "special touches" were an incredible blessing… To be honest, I almost backed out at the last minute because I have so much to do, and I was having a hard time justifying the time out of the office. But now, having experienced your conference, I not only hope to attend the next one, but would like to see if I am able to bring more of my staff with me.

This year's program is currently being designed with the help of the Portland Host Committee and our National HR Advisory Board.

We hope to see you in Portland!
