How We're Funded

Action Without Borders is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization. We have several funding streams that enable us to carry out our mission.

Using the following links, you can download our tax filings (IRS Form 990) from recent years. For older filings, please visit GuideStar.

Donations

Donations are an important source of funding for our work, and we welcome your contribution, no matter how small. Action Without Borders is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization under the U.S. tax code, so if you are a U.S. resident, your donation to Action Without Borders is fully tax-deductible within the law.

There are several ways you can donate to Action Without Borders. Click here to find out how. Thank you for your support!

Earned Income

Another important source of revenue for Action Without Borders is our earned income. In order to increase our financial resources and expand our programs, we began charging U.S.-based nonprofit organizations to post jobs on Idealist.org in 1999. All other listings on Idealist for nonprofit organizations remained free of charge.

Other sources of earned income include the fees we assess to consultants to join our Idealist Consultant and Vendor Directory, to nonprofit organizations to attend our Idealist Nonprofit Career Fairs, to graduate schools to attend our Idealist Graduate Degrees for the Public Good Fairs, and to attendees at some of our trainings and workshops.

Earned income has provided most of our annual budget in recent years, allowing us to support our many programs and services, and to keep costs low (often free) for most of them.

Foundation Support

Over the years, Action Without Borders has received financial support from a variety of foundations and grantmaking bodies. These are:

The Annie E. Casey Foundation The Lumina Foundation
Ashoka The Markle Foundation
AT&T Foundation The Open Society Institute
Carnegie Corporation of New York The Packard Foundation
The Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation The Rudolf Steiner Foundation
The Forbes Funds The Skoll Foundation
The Ford Foundation The Stern Family Fund
The Hyde & Watson Foundation The Surdna Foundation
Kellogg Action Lab

In-Kind Support and Institutional Partnerships

Action Without Borders has developed partnerships with a wide range of institutions that contribute to our operations through in-kind support. For more information on these associations, please see our Partnerships page.

Our most important source of in-kind support comes from Aladdin Knowledge Systems, an Israeli software firm. Since our earliest days, Aladdin has graciously hosted us without charge in their New York City office, providing our staff with computers, telecommunications, technical support, and a place to make Idealist possible.
