Overview:
American University Hillel seeks to hire two part time Program Associates to focus on our on campus initiatives and international programs.
About American University Hillel:
American University Hillel is located on the university’s main campus in northwest Washington, DC—at the hub of DC’s exciting political and vibrant cultural life.
AU Hillel serves graduate and undergraduate students on the main campus, as well as students at the near-by Washington College of Law and the Washington Semester program campuses.
Greater Washington has a strong and growing Jewish community and is the home to a number of major Jewish organizations, including B’nai Brith, AIPAC, the Embassy of Israel, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, and The Schusterman International Center of Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life.
AU has 5,866 undergraduates and 3,263 graduate students in six colleges on three campuses. It is particularly strong in international programming. AU was ranked as the 86th best college in America. The Princeton Review reports that AU is the most political campus in the country.
Close to 20% of the student body is Jewish. About 750 undergraduates and 200 graduate students are actively involved with Hillel.
Initiatives:
• Weekly Shabbat (Conservative and Reform) services and dinners.
• Orthodox programming is coordinated with Aish HaTorah on campus.
• Interfaith events with the Christian and Muslim community at AU.
• Rosh Hashanah services and Yom Kippur services with a complimentary break-fast for the community.
• Hillel offers career development programs and has teamed up with the Career Center to offer interview tips and resume critiques. Hillel also helps students find mentors, internships, and jobs.
• Annual Sunday Bagel Brunch with a live jazz band for students, alumni, and guests during Family Weekend.
• Regular Jewish learning opportunities.
• Weekly email notices called “News for Jews” to inform a listserv of 1,500 on campus and in the community of upcoming events and job opportunities.
• Israel advocacy and culture: coordinated with American University Students for Israel and the Israel and Law Society at the Washington College of Law
International Involvement:
• 2 birthright israel trips (one in winter and one in summer) annually with 20-30 students attending each trip.
• Alternative Winter Break and Spring Break trips to help Jewish communities overseas. (Such as Brazil, Russia, India, Cuba, and Argentina.)
• Hillel also sponsors philanthropic work in the United States by organizing service trips to help Jewish communities on the Gulf Coast, such as Mississippi.

Responsibilities:
Working with and reporting to AU Hillel’s Associate Director and Director. The Program Associate is the energetic and congenial point of contact with students and others interested in Jewish life at AU, connecting them with people and resources relevant to them.
Student Advising
The Program Associate serves by assisting in program planning and implementation, developing leadership, assisting with conflict resolution, helping to facilitate meetings and elections. He/she also helps to connect students with resources and opportunities of interest to them.
Student Engagement
The Program Associate increases student contact with the Jewish community by developing relationships with students and engaging new populations, including students participating in birthright Israel and other Israel programs.
Promotion
The Program Associate is responsible for sending a weekly e-mail update during the school year, posting activities on the website, providing Shabbat service leaders with announcements about upcoming activities, and supervising other publicity such as tabling, flyering, and Telecommunications Billboard messages. The Program Associate works with the Associate Director on student mailings.
Logistics
The Program Associate assists with the Shabbat dinner and Passover logistics including the acquisition of food, set-up, and clean-up. He/she assists with logistics for the high holy days, non-student Hillel initiated programs, and as needed.
Staff/Attend Programs
The Program Associate staffs and/or attends some, but not all, Jewish student programs at AU, Embassy of Israel programs, birthright israel trips, university programs, UJC/Federation programs, and Hillel International programs.
Substitute for Other Positions
The Program Associate will perform administrative tasks as needed.
Qualifications:
An undergraduate degree from an accredited university.
2-3 years Hillel experience as an undergraduate or post graduate or the equivalent
Familiarity with Jewish life and an appreciation of Hillel’s pluralistic mission.
A strong sense of Jewish pride and enthusiasm
Experience with program development, implementation and evaluation.
Excellent people skills.
Ability to multitask.
Excellent organizational skills.
Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
Ability to work as a devoted and loyal member of our dynamic team.
Start Date: July 14, 2008
Salary: Salary is competitive and will be based on a 20-25 hour work week.
