About Beyond 12:
Beyond 12 is a national technology-based nonprofit that was launched in 2010 to dramatically increase the number of students from under-resourced communities who graduate from college and who translate their degrees into meaningful employment and choice-filled lives. In partnership with high schools and colleges, our mobile college success platform and our virtual coaches provide students with the academic, social, and emotional support they need to succeed in higher education and beyond. We envision a world in which a student’s race, zip code, and parent’s level of education will no longer predict their college graduation outcomes or their future success.
Beyond 12 has created a network of college coaches who provide virtual, 1:1 coaching to students who attend its partner schools and programs, beginning the summer after their senior year of high school. In this “near peer” model, recent college graduates who successfully completed their own college degrees are assigned to coach college-bound high school students. Coaches help students navigate six key challenge areas: achieving academic and career goals; balancing school, work and extracurricular activities; utilizing campus resources; understanding and accessing available financial resources; networking and building social capital; and planning for college graduation and career. Ultimately, coaches help students make the most of their college experience by helping them become academically and socially engaged in campus life.
About the Position:
Are you a recent college graduate who is passionate about lifting other students as you climb your own ladders of success? You could inspire the next generation by becoming a college coach. You will work with college students virtually -- by phone, text messaging, email, MyCoach mobile app chat, and social media -- to help them navigate the beginning of their college career and, ultimately, achieve their dream of earning a degree. You will use your academic and personal experiences to help your students set goals, create education plans and budgets, and manage their time effectively so they can be successful in and out of the classroom.
You will also consistently collect important data about your students to keep track of their progress and serve them in the most effective way possible, and help our organization better understand college persistence and graduation trends.
Beyond 12 offers two types of coaching roles: the Dedicated College Coach, who will manage a consistent caseload of students, and a Coaching by Request Coach, who will manage one-off requests for support.
Beyond 12 considers all candidates for BOTH coaching roles, and when making the final decision about employment offers, will indicate which role we are offering to you.
DEDICATED COLLEGE COACH
You will establish and build relationships with your dedicated caseload of up to 250 students virtually, maintaining consistent contact by scheduling regular coaching sessions to deliver personalized, motivating, and actionable coaching consistent with Beyond 12’s coaching curriculum. With every student interaction, you will collect important data using a Salesforce-based student success platform to enter detailed notes about how your student is doing. This data, along with logging relevant activities and information about students (e.g. number of visits to the tutoring center, curriculum completion, social and emotional topics, campus involvement, and other relevant milestones) is essential to help Beyond 12 have a deeper understanding of college persistence and graduation trends which is key to our work.
In order to meet students where they are, and provide them with support when needed, this position is scheduled to cover a 5-day (Monday - Friday) work week.
COACHING BY REQUEST COACH
As college students submit one-off requests for support (questions, issues, and concerns about their current college experience), you will provide timely, motivating, and actionable coaching consistent with Beyond 12’s coaching curriculum.
In order to meet students where they are and provide them with time-sensitive support when needed, this position is scheduled to cover a 5-day work week with the possibility of some hours extending past traditional business hours that will include weekend work on Saturdays in rotation with your other coaching colleagues. See example schedule in the FAQs. (Note that this role will always have 2 consecutive days off every week).
About You:
You are passionate and excited about having an impact on the lives of college students from underrepresented backgrounds. You consistently demonstrate empathy and respect by seeking to understand the obstacles others face and by creating a safe and supportive environment in which they can interact with you virtually. You are comfortable with technology and understand the important role that data plays in providing insights that can help address our most intractable social challenges. Finally, you pursue all tasks with energy and drive, never giving up even in the face of obstacles and setbacks.
