Compassion & Choices is seeking an Regional Campaign & Advocacy Manager (Midwest) to advance our work to improve care, expand options and empower everyone to chart their end-of-life journey.

The Regional Advocacy Manager is primarily responsible for managing state teams to work on C&C campaigns including medical aid in dying, dementia, disparities in end-of-life care, Finish Strong initiative, and the full range of end-of-life options. This position is responsible for providing campaign management in collaboration with the National Director of Advocacy consistent with Compassion & Choices’ mission. This position is primarily responsible for effectively building the capacity of local groups and state campaigns in order to move Compassion & Choices medical aid-in-dying campaigns forward. 

This is a full-time, remotely-located (but Illinois strongly preferred), paid position reporting to the National Director of Advocacy. Compensation offered will be commensurate with experience. 

This position will primarily be responsible for:

  • Applies campaign best practices to develop and implement customized, strategic technical assistance plans necessary to support campaign states and volunteers.  
  • Oversees the day-to-day campaign operations in campaign states, near-next states, special states, and assigned constituency groups.
  • Provides assistance to local staff and volunteers.
  • Coordinates the entire range of campaign activities including strategic campaign planning, identifying contractors and overseeing contracts, developing and managing budgets,. coordinating the development of  materials/collateral, and managing internal structures and processes.
  • Works with the state campaign managers to write and execute effective campaign plans designed to move campaigns forward, taking into account areas such as grassroots activism, grassroots recruitment, fundraising, media and lobbying.
  • Promotes and demonstrates effective collaboration with all C&C teams.
  • Attends and participates in all relevant C&C and external meetings throughout the year, including but not limited to for the implementation calls, weekly staff check-ins with campaign managers, and weekly field calls.   
  • Understands and operates under the structure and policies for c3/c4s.
  • Cultivates relationships with assigned constituency groups to build broader support for the end-of-life choice movement.
  • Assists Independent contractors  in navigating internal C&C structures, policies and practices.  
  • Ensures campaign managers and team are meeting goals.
  • Using the appropriate means, communicates campaign status to the appropriate individuals within the timeframes defined. 
  •  Support of all C&C efforts as requested; including, but not limited to, activities such as identifying prospects, briefing donors, alerting staff of fundraising opportunities, reaching out to donors, participating in phone-athons, etc.
  •  Timely and accurate completion of related reports (such as company credit card statements, performance reviews, time cards, etc.).
  • Demonstrates commitment to and active support of C&C’s Diversity & Inclusion program.
  • Other duties as required.  

Preferred Qualifications (You will be a good fit):

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Political Science, Public Policy, Law, Journalism).
  • Five (5) year’s directly related experience (or an equivalency of related experience and/or education may be considered), which includes:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local, state and federal government activities and structures; the ability to assess the local and state governments as they relate to policy/advocacy issues and activities.
  • Demonstrated understanding in advocacy/public policy, community organization/mobilization, media/communications, and grassroots advocacy tactic development and implementation.
  • Hands-on experience overseeing legislative campaigns at the state level including legislator advocacy, hearing preparation and constituency outreach is preferred.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and ability to determine the best means of communication based on the situation.  
  • Knowledge of various other health, aging and advocacy organizations or nonprofit organizations preferred.
  • Experience working in public health and aging policy and volunteer management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, vendors and the public as part of a team. 

Skills:

  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, inductive and deductive reasoning, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of related software (e.g., Database management; Google Cloud; Internet Research; Spreadsheet; Word Processing; PowerPoint, etc.). Must have the ability to adapt to new software tools as they become available.
  • Travel:  Must be able and willing to travel (overnight and possible weekends); 40% travel.   Business related mileage and travel costs are employer paid.
