Mission:

Young Women’s leadership Institute-Kenya

Mission statement

Young Women’s Leadership Institute (YWLI) is a non-governmental development organisation, registered as a Trust and set up in 1999 by a group of young women attending the African Women Leadership Institute (AWLI) organised for Kenyan Nationals by Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMWA). YWLI was founded to create space for young women to organise themselves around leadership issues, identify issues of concern to them, and speak for themselves. Thus, Building Leaders, Creating links and Developing ourselves. YWLI aims to provide training for young women, serves as a resource and research forum on young women’s issues and provides a platform for young women to participate in policy and decision-making.

YWLI has a five-member board of Trustees; all of whom are young women of different professions and in different leadership positions. One of the founding members of YWLI is a Nominated Member of Parliament and has been in the forefront in advocating for both the youth and women.

YWLI intends to build young women leaders through information, networking, training and Intergenerational forums. YWLI focuses on three broad areas:
:
? Training
? Mentorship
? Young Women’s Network
We are also in the process of establishing a Young Women’s Resource Centre that will ensure and provide a networking forum for young women and the proper coverage of the 3 thematic areas.

It aims to contribute to the strengthening of the Women’s Movement by bridging the gap across different generations of women through Intergenerational links and capacity building for young women to help in tapping their leadership potentials.

It also aims to provide solidarity, support, awareness, and to build links with other African women active in areas of their own development. Young women need avenues to place their own issues on the development agenda, and this is why we aim to strengthen links with other women’s groups and organisations both nationally and internationally. We believe networking is a vital development tool for the increased awareness and empowerment of young women and African women in general.
