Organization Overview
St. HOPE Leadership Academy is a college-preparatory K-12 public charter school in New York City. Scheduled to open in the fall of 2008, SHLA is organized into three small schools: elementary school (K – 4), middle school (5 – 8) and high school (9 – 12). Each school enrolls approximately 300 – 500 students. The school provides a rigorous, standards-based college preparatory curriculum intensive interventions for students who are performing below grade level, a defined character development program and extensive leadership development and community service opportunities in an ordered, structured and disciplined leaning environment.

St. HOPE Leadership Academy is being established in partnership with St. HOPE Inc. (St. HOPE). Established in 1989 by NBA All-Star Kevin Johnson, St. HOPE is a national nonprofit community development organization whose mission is to revitalize inner-city communities through public education, civic leadership, economic development and the arts. In 2003, St. HOPE launched two major revitalization projects which combined have initiated an education and economic resurgence in the underserved, inner-city neighborhood of Oak Park in Sacramento, California. The 40 Acres Art and Cultural Center is a mixed-use retail complex located in the heart of the Oak Park commercial district intended to create a destination locale that would serve as a catalyst for economic and cultural renewal. St. HOPE Public Schools, a K-12 independent public charter school system serving over 1,500 in six small schools, provides Oak Park youth with a private school education, for free.
