Mission:

Alabama Appleseed's mission is to make legal and social systems better serve Alabama's citizens. Rather than deliver legal services to individuals, Alabama Appleseed identifies structures within the state's social and legal systems that cause unfair treatment of our citizens or fail to protect our citizens, and develops strategies to improve those structures. Alabama's initial projects stem from two areas of concern to the state: (1) the need for reform of judicial selection; and (2) supporting the efforts to call a state constitutional convention to rewrite the Alabama state constitution. Alabama Appleseed's projects, as well as its areas of concentration, will vary over time as the needs of the state change.

Alabama Appleseed is one of eighteen public interest law centers started by The Appleseed Foundation, whose goal is to establish a network of multi-disciplinary public interest organizations, working at the local level. Appleseed Centers, which have mobilized leadership from a broad segment of the bar and from others outside of the legal profession, are working on a wide range of locally-defined systemic issues - ranging from good government to health care to community economic development and welfare reform.
