Description:
Sean L. Conner was born in Oakland, California and is a graduate of Skyline High School in Oakland and a senior at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska where he?s earning a Bachelor?s degree in Business Administration with a Minor in Education. Additionally, he?s earned a Professional Administrator?s Certificate from the Village Management Institute at the College.
While in college Sean was elected President of the Associated Student Body of Sheldon Jackson College making his victory not only the first for any African American in the college?s 128 year history, but making him the first African American man in Alaska to serve as student body president at an institution of higher education. Prior to the presidency, he served in many elected and appointed roles on campus.
During the summer of 2003 Sean was an Institute for Political Service Fellow for United Leaders in Boston, Massachusetts where he was one of the 36 fellows out over 750 applicants from 200 schools from 46 states. As a fellow, he worked for State Representative Marie P. St. Fleur, then House Chairwoman of the Joint Committee on Education, Arts, and Humanities and in the National Development Department of City Year, Inc., an action tank for national service.
He?s also worked in the government affairs departments of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. and the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, both in Washington, D.C, as well as doing research at the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland. There he researched and wrote The Relationship Between Church Attendance and Civic Engagement Among 15? 25 Year Olds.
He served in the City of Oakland as a youth commissioner for the Mayor?s Youth Advisory Commission, a commission of 25 young people appointed by the mayor and city council to advise them on issues and policies as they relate to young people. While serving on the Commission he served in many roles including Commission Attorney as well as Liaison to Oakland Unified School District.
Sean is a board member for the Oakland Unified School District?s Office of School-to-Career and High School Reform, an active member of the Sitka Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa International, an educational fraternity.
He is also a member of Acts Full Gospel Church of God in Christ where under the leadership of Bishop Bob Jackson he actively serves in the leadership of the 1000 + youth ministry as both a volunteer and staffer.
