I have recently completed my Environmental Science Master's thesis, a participatory research study exploring contributing factors to the endangered population of Cook Inlet, Alaska beluga whale decline and lack of recovery. This study utilized the knowledge of native and non-native fishermen and Native Alaskan beluga hunters to document their observations overtime, identifying potential factors that may have influenced their decline and are impacting their recovery. This data was then compared with existing scientific research to explore similarities and identify possible gaps in the current knowledge. This then was used to create hypothesis for further research into those areas that may not have been considered previously.

This type of research has grown in recent years as its usefulness has been realized. It has been used in various areas of study including natural resource management, planning, human use studies, agriculture, resource sustainability research, climate change, fisheries, ecotourism, forestry and as initial exploratory research to direct further study in areas where little quantitative data is available.

My area of knowledge is primarily in marine, watershed and coastal research. This, along with my employment background in environmental public health and education in cultural anthropology and environmental science allow me to bring adaptable skills and knowledge to various areas of participatory environmental research and study.
