Legal Volunteer options:
3-hour shifts at courthouse to assist individuals applying for protection orders
- help these individuals with paperwork
- accompany individuals in court
- engage in safety planning with these individuals
- make necessary referrals for individuals applying for protection orders
- complete intakes as necessary
- interact professionally and efficiently with all court staff and law enforcement officers
Availability to Accompany Survivors to Court Dates
- be part of team that can accompany survivors to court when you are available
- accompany survivors to family, criminal, or protection order cases
One week on call answering emergency line
- emergency respond to calls from law enforcement with victims who screen in for high lethality
- safety plan with survivors who screen in for high lethality
Follow-up via telephone with victims of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) who have been involved with law enforcement
- provide necessary information to victims of IPV and proffer services as needed
- answer questions knowledgeably about the criminal justice system in relation to IPV
- understand the victim’s rights act and advocate accordingly
- maintain working relationship with law enforcement advocates and detectives
Commitment:
· 3-20 hours/week based on volunteer preference, other options available
· 6 months for training, continuity and consistency
