Purpose of this Project:
The purpose of the Art Therapy Assistant project is to support the implementation of art therapy programs in local schools, fostering emotional expression, creativity, and well-being among students. As a volunteer in this role, you will assist certified art therapists and educators in facilitating art therapy sessions, positively impacting students' mental health and self-expression.
Role Description:
As a volunteer Art Therapy Assistant, your role will be to collaborate with certified art therapists and educators in organizing and conducting art therapy sessions for students. You will assist in setting up materials, guiding students in art activities, and creating a supportive environment for emotional expression through art.
Work Activities:
1. Assisting in the setup and preparation of art therapy sessions.
2. Guiding students in various art activities designed to promote self-expression and emotional
well-being.
3. Providing support and encouragement to students during art sessions.
4. Collaborating with certified art therapists and educators to evaluate student progress and
engagement.
5. Maintaining a safe and inclusive environment during art therapy sessions.
6. Participating in debrief sessions and providing feedback on students' artistic expressions and
experiences.
7. Assisting in documenting and organizing artwork created during sessions.
Skills & Qualifications:
To be successful in this role, you should possess:
1. A genuine interest in art therapy and its benefits for mental health.
2. Good communication and interpersonal skills.
3. Patience and empathy while working with students from diverse backgrounds.
4. Ability to follow instructions and collaborate within a team.
5. Creativity and an artistic background or experience (preferred but not mandatory).
Orientation & Training:
Before starting your volunteer work as an Art Therapy Assistant, you will receive an orientation
session led by certified art therapists. This orientation will cover the principles of art therapy, session guidelines, student interaction approaches, and safety protocols.
Project Start Date:
The project's start date will be communicated to you by the organization coordinating the volunteer program. Typically, volunteers align their schedule with the school's academic calendar.
Materials to Bring:
1. Art supplies (paper, crayons, markers, paints, brushes, etc. based on the therapist's guidance).
2. Notebook for taking session notes or observations.
3. Any specific materials or resources related to art therapy (if available).
4. Your enthusiasm, patience, and a supportive attitude towards students' creative expression.
