Description:
Bolivia, once a part of the ancient Inca Empire, is a fascinating mix of indigenous culture and the Mediterranean culture brought by the Spaniards. On religious feast days, for example, pre-Columbian rites are practiced, and the indigenous peoples express themselves through dances and songs that blend the two cultures. Cultural diversity can be found in the three official languages spoken: Aymara, Quechua (both indigenous) and Spanish. The most developed and densely populated areas of the country are in or near the beautiful Andes mountains. AFS Programas Interculturales hosts more than 134 students from around the world each year.
Program Description
You'll spend the first month of your semester or year taking part in language training to strengthen your conversational Spanish skills. Then you'll begin a service program working with the environment, art and archaeology, or agriculture. You will be placed with a host family in a community based on the type of project you choose.
Social projects include working with disabled children, at a home for senior citizens, or at a shelter for needy children. As you live with a host family, work on a variety of projects with Bolivians, and participate in community life, you'll not only teach others but also learn more than you ever anticipated!
