Description:
**Volunteer Position**
Assist the Montana Food Bank Network and the local Office of Public Assistance in the implementation of a county-wide SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-formerly the Food Stamp Program) outreach project. Assist with the following: (Approx. 5-10 hrs/week, minimum 6 mo. commitment)
* Organize a group of community volunteers to provide one-on-one SNAP/food stamp application assistance in locations across Fergus County.
* Help launch an informational campaign promoting the benefits of SNAP. (Example: hang up posters/display brochures at local businesses & community agencies)
* Work with community outreach group to identify effective outreach strategies. (locations, messages, events, etc.)
* Meet with community members to explore opportunities for collaboration and create partnerships. (Example: grocery store owners, pastors, senior centers)
* Contact local media to convey outreach messages. (Example: let local newspaper know about an outreach event going on in the community)
* Oversee community computer used for SNAP outreach, coordinate use among volunteers.
Note: We can work with each volunteer to adapt the job description based on their level of interest in each of these activities. This work will be done in close partnership with Lorianne Burhop, Public Policy Coordinator at the Montana Food Bank Network, who will provide all the resources and information needed to complete each task.
Skills:
Personal attributes: Commitment to the alleviation of hunger in Montana. Comfortable with people from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds.
Management skills: Know how to manage and prioritize work, motivate and promote teamwork. Possess good organizational abilities. Work effectively both independently and in a team setting.
Communication skills: Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with staff members from other agencies, community organizations, and the public. Good oral and written communication skills.
Other: Ability to travel throughout Fergus County. Valid driver's license.
Note: Volunteer will also complete an orientation with Lorianne Burhop, Public Policy Coordinator at Montana Food Bank Network and a workshop on how to assist individuals completing a SNAP/food stamp application provided by Montana Food Bank Network or local Office of Public Assistance.
