The Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University has a program through the MBA program called Fisher Board Fellows. Fisher Board Fellows is a student-run initiative that brings together the Columbus community and select Fisher MBAs through the placement of students on the boards of local not-for-profits as non-voting Fellows. These Fellows, mentored by a board member and with the full support of the not-for-profit executive director, perform a consultative project that harnesses the student's business experience and passion for the not-for-profit's mission while adding long-term value to the partner organization.

An MBA is a great way to acquire the business background to really have an impact in the nonprofit sector, and Fisher offers a flexible curriculum with numerous opportunities to get involved.

I'm applying to MPA programs (specializing in non-profit management) in New York City and I have many questions.
1. Is there a difference between applying full time vs part time- are there advantages or disadvantages to either status?
I've boiled the selection of schools down to two- NYU Wagner and Baruch College (CUNY). NYU Wagner is ranked #7 or #9 in US News, any thoughts about Baruch's program?

Thank you.

Hi Sylvia,
While I cannot offer any thoughts on the ranking of the two programs you're interested in, I can direct you to two articles we have in our Graduate Education Resource Center about going to grad school part-time. I hope you find them helpful.
Thanks for your post and good luck!

I have been thinking of Non-Profit Management, but I don't really understand if I would fit into this program or if it's right for me. I have a BA in International Relations as well as a BA in Spanish, and I worked in Administration for a NGO in DC for a year. I really enjoyed the Administration aspect, and I would love to become a Program Manager and hopefully move on to building a NGO with others.

My question is, do I need to go back to school to pursue this degree in order to become a Program Manager, or will I be better off trying to find work as an Assistant and building up from there?

Also, what other types of careers can be pursued with having an MBA in Non-Profit Management?

I am slightly confused. I have a master's in mechanical engineering and have been working full time. However, I want to make a jump into non profit management and public policy in future. I have been looking into certification program but I am not sure if this will be the right path. I don't want to quit my job right now but eventually I will. I know that it will take a while to grasp the concepts in a new field but in the long run it's worth it. Can you please advice me on this?

Also, I would be more interested in programs offered in long island for ease of travel.

Hi, I'm looking to make a career change to the public sector by pursuing an MPA. I have an undergraduate Business Administration degree and have been working in a public accounting firm since I gradudated. I have, however, been involved in the nonprofit sector both in my workplace and outside of it, such as coordinating volunteer programs in my workplace, serving on the board of directors for a nonprofit organzaition, and worked on small nonprofit consulting projects.

Is there anyone here who might be able to share their experience switching from private to the nonprofit sector, and perhaps which programs/schools are more open to accepting applicants from different professional backgrounds?
