Description:

Reef Relief's Clean Water Campaign is dedicated to improving water quality for coral reefs in Florida and around the globe through policy guidance, public awareness and grassroots activism.

Current efforts focus on improving stormwater treatment in Key West, promoting advanced wastewater and stormwater treatment and compliance with the No Discharge Zone for boater sewage throughout the Florida Keys. We're supporting adoption of a new state policy to phase out ocean outfalls on coral reefs in South Florida through adoption of advanced wastewater treatment and reuse. We support reducing the impacts of agricultural runoff from the Everglades into Florida Bay and the downstream coral reefs of the Florida Keys. Reef Relief opposes offshore oil and gas development in fragile marine areas, especially efforts to open up the Eastern Gulf of Mexico that would impact the downstream coral reefs of the Florida Keys.

In the Bahamas, we are promoting the adoption of alumunium recycling on the island of Green Turtle Cay, organizing island clean-ups to reduce marine debris, and selling green bags to reduce the use of plastic bags that end up in the islands open pit landfill.

Throughout the world, Reef Relief provides comments on projects to insure that reef-friendly options are adopted to reduce sedimentation, runoff, and inadequately-treated wastewater and stormwater from reaching fragile coral reefs. Coral reefs need clear, clean, nutrient-free waters to thrive.
