Description:
Water not War asks all governments to commit 1% of defence budgets to providing every person on the planet with fresh water. What makes it special is it insists that the 1% also be applied to the creative minds and physical strength of the scientists, engineers, soldier and salespeople engaged in building weapons and making war. "Spend a week or so working to bring water to Iraqi women and children and one's attitude to war would be changed forever."
Water Not War originated when Mr Damour, described as "6 foot 5 inches tall and bult like a line-backer" was trampled to death in the post-Thanksgiving Sales of 2008.
"We have become savages", said one commentator. That same November the last three surviving British veterans of the First World War were wheeled out to commemorate their fallen comrades. The "War to end Wars" of course did nothing of the kind. We have become savages indeed.
Thus, the idea of bringing humanity's most healing reality, Water, together with our most destructive, War, was born to :-
a) prevent wars over water that will make oil wars look like children's games;
b) make a major contribution to slowing global warming
c) take the psychological step of choosing to begin to build-down weapons;
and
d) provide a genuinely life-giving and life-enhancing memorial to all who gave their lives, believing they were building peace.
There is no formal membership. Individuals and groups from the USA, Scotland, England and Wales are promoting Water Not War through their mailings and websites, participation in meetings and organization of events. They range from schools to faith communities, trades unions to solidarity groups, ecological and peace activists. Everyone is welcome.
How people can help:
Become involved by:-
a) Signing on to the campaign.
b) Persuading the assemblies of your faith communities, local governments, national governments, trades unions, colleges, etc. to adopt its basic requirements
c) Participating in rituals to re-develop our sense of reverence for water;
d) joining the Echoes of Silence Eco-Peace Brigade to Nicaragua in July (see topics)
e) Invite Echoes of Silence to hold a local meeting during EofS coordinator's US (East Coast March 14 - 29; West Coast: October and November) and UK (August) tours. (see topics)
