Description:
WISE, the Women’s Islamic Initiative in Spirituality and Equality (www.wisemuslimwomen.org), is a global program, social network and grassroots social justice movement led by Muslim women. WISE is empowering Muslim women to fully participate in their communities and nations and amplifying their collective voices. WISE is a program of the American Society of Muslim Advancement (www.asmasociety.org), a non-profit 501c3 organization based in New York City. It is co-sponsored by the Cordoba Initiative (www.cordobainitiative.org).
WISE is seeking research and writing interns to work on creating content for their web portal. Areas of focus include, but not limited to: Muslim women leaders past and present; contemporary Muslim women artists from all over the world; Muslim women’s activism past and present; women hadith scholars, jurists, mufftiyahs; historical and contemporary case studies of Muslim women creating positive social change in their communities; current issues (i.e. FGC, domestic violence, religious and political authority, marriage and divorce, etc.) affecting Muslim women worldwide; grassroots organizations and campaigns working on these issues.
Specific Responsibilities/Required Qualifications:
• Minimum of 15-20 required work hours within our schedule, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm.
• Graduate or Undergraduate
• Strong research skills, writing and editing skills
• Middle East/Islamic/Women’s studies concentration preferred
• Strong interest in non-profit work, Islam, gender justice and women’s empowerment
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, steady, dependable, and energetic
• Culturally sensitive and aware; ability to work in international, culturally diverse environment
• Strong PC computer skills (Word, Excel, Power Point); familiarity with Internet research
• Occasionally minimal administrative duties might be assigned

Remuneration: This is an unpaid internship, with the possibility to move into a paid position should an opportunity become available. College credit also available.
