Description:
Position: Assessment/Intake Intern
Reports to: Administrative Coordinator
Position Term: Minimum of 3 months
Location: African Refuge
Hours: Mondays and Wednesdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Background: African Refuge is a community-based organization with the mission of improving the quality of life of African immigrants and refugees and other underserved families living in the Parkhill neighborhood of Staten Island. To achieve its mission, it promotes community engagement and facilitates access to meaningful resources and activities that promote the dignity and health of youth and families in the community.
Scope of Work: Serve as initial point of contact for potential participants and referring parties of African Refuge Drop-in-Center. Welcome and direct visitors to the appropriate service and resources. Provide excellent customer service to both clients and referring parties. Interview visitors to determine the appropriate programs and acquire sufficient information to understand visitor’s needs and to facilitate their visit to the Drop-in-Center.
Essential Job Functions:
•Welcome clients.
•Assess the needs of the client, provide information about services offered and direct them to the appropriate person.
•Maintain “daily intake log” of clients, ensure this is filled out when every client comes in
•Call and confirm appointments.
•Manage Volunteer and Inventory Databases.
Requirements
•Computer skills (Word, Excel).
•Time management.
•Communication and people skills.
•Ability to deal with difficult clients and populations, cross-cultural relations, interpersonal skills.
•Language skills helpful.
•Interest in working with the African refugee population and lower income families.
•Knowledge of Park Hill community.
•Ability to be self directed and motivated.
•Writing and analytical skills.
