Description:

PUBLICOLOR AFTERSCHOOL
PROGRAM STAFF

Great opportunity for creative, hands-
on youth development professionals
or artist/designers who would enjoy
working with underprivileged youth.

Publicolor seeks program
site staff for our Paint Club
program, an afterschool program
through which teenagers are taught
the marketable skill of commercial
painting, then are empowered to
paint the public spaces of their own
school in warm, welcoming colors.
This program builds a sense of
ownership and provides many
students with their first experience of
success. The program is
transformative for both the schools
and students involved. Program sites
are typically in middle or high
schools in Brooklyn, the Bronx, or
Manhattan serving a mostly low-
income, inner-city student body.

Program staff members work in pairs
Tuesday through Friday afterschool
and all day on Saturdays (25-30
hours a week). On Saturdays,
groups of corporate and community
volunteers paint alongside students,
and staff encourage open
communication and informal
mentoring throughout the program.
Staff also serve as vital liaisons to
school principals as well as
administrative, custodial, and security
staff.

Publicolor offers a salary competitive with other arts and education programs.

There are some opportunities for full-time employment for the right individual. There are also Saturday positions available, send inquiries to Rachael@publicolor.org.

Additional Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will be dynamic,
enthusiastic, engaged, and born
leaders with superb communication
skills. They should be genuinely
excited about the prospect of
engaging underachieving students in
their education and combating our
nation’s alarming dropout rate (1/3).
Commercial painting experience is a
plus, as is fluency in Spanish and a
youth development background with
teens age 12-17.

Candidates must be willing to travel
to all boroughs and possess a
college degree. Additionally,
candidate should:
• Be able to paint like a
professional commercial painter and
to teach this skill.
• Be willing to work hard and get
dirty.
• Be willing to hold program
participants, other staff, and
volunteers to a high standard of
excellence/professionalism.
• Be able to organize, direct and
motivate large groups of people
• Possess superb people skills
and be an upbeat, effective
communicator
• Possess excellent
organizational skills in handling
schedule, inventory, etc.
• Enjoy working with inner-city
youth.
• Be able to relate to people of
diverse ethnic backgrounds.
• Possess a sense of humor,
sound judgment, and emotional
maturity.
• Take initiative and work as a
team player.
