Description:
Summary:
The 1.3 million member United Food Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW), a powerful voice for working men and women, is seeking a Sr. Programmer/Analyst to develop software to accomplish project goals and/or solve user/departmental problems.
Duties:
Existing Applications
• Works with users to analyze problems, improve operations. Deals with outside vendors for hardware/software to report and track problems.
• Revises existing PC, mainframe and web based applications to increase operating efficiency or to adapt to new requirements (maintenance programming).
• Supports the user community related to existing programs and applications.
• Provides programming support for the development or enhancement of new and existing field and headquarters systems.
• Provides support for integrating information from UFCW databases into third party commercial applications including but not limited to the Microsoft Office Suite and Corel WordPerfect.
New Applications
• Reviews project specifications, user documents, etc., to develop program specifications.
• Writes, tests, and installs new PC, mainframe and web based applications for UFCW headquarters.
• Enters program instructions into the computer system. Confirms program operation through the program development cycle which includes converting workflow information into the appropriate computer language, analyzing output from test runs and completing program revisions until program satisfactorily performs the function(s) as designed in the documented program specifications.
• Trains users to use new programs and applications.
• Deals directly with users to assist with testing new software and/or enhancements.
• Compiles documentation of program development and subsequent revisions. This documentation will include procedures for using and maintaining programs.
Department Operations
• Assists the computer operations staff with the production batch schedule, including resolving problems in running computer programs.
• Assists user department in defining information requirements.
• Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
• Maintains the security of UFCW operations by keeping information confidential.
Qualifications:
A minimum of ten years in application development with a strong background in database management, or a Bachelors Degree (or certificate) in Computer Science or related field plus five years of applicable experience or at least three years of successful coursework in areas relating to UFCW applications and a minimum of five years experience successfully administering, enhancing, and supporting UFCW applications for both headquarters and field operations.
Strong background in COBOL. Proficiency with SQL, Visual Basic, Visual Studio.Net, ASP, ASP.Net, HTML and JavaScript. Experience with Windows XP and the Microsoft Office Suite.
Strong written and oral communication skills are required. Ability to comprehend vendor technical manuals. Ability to present information and respond to questions from groups or individuals.
Ability to work under time pressure and to juggle multiple priorities. Ability to read, record, analyze and interpret statistical information from various sources including CRT presentation.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply them to practical situations. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to work with limited supervision.
Strives to stay knowledgeable of current and upcoming technology pertaining to application development, object-oriented architecture, service-oriented architecture, web applications, web services, client scripting, the .NET Framework, security, Windows, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft.
The work is performed in a normal office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position involves, but is not limited to, use of computer keyboard, close vision, sitting for long periods, stooping, bending and reaching.
