Description:
The Community Organizer works under the supervision of the Director of Community Action and collaborates with other organizers to engage neighborhood residents in activities focusing on youth development, public safety, and civic engagement in order to improve the quality of life for residents in the Dudley square neighborhood of Roxbury. Primary responsibilities include:
* Build relationships with residents in the community, particularly with teens, through public meetings, door to door informational campaigns, and by being visible and accessible in areas frequented by residents. Design and disseminate flyers and other related materials.
* Help to raise awareness of public safety issues and rsources by coordinating meetings between residents and police, and by responding to resident-requested initiatives such as special classes and events.
* Develop and coordinate MPDC's VIP Neighborhood Coalition, with focus on the Orchard Gardens/Orchard Commons community: arrange and staff monthly resident-led Public Safety Committee meetings, supervise and provide support to Block Captains and other volunteers.
* In conjunction with the Director, seek and obtain funding for youth programs, including summer jobs programs. Recruit, train and supervise youths.
* Assist with data collection and provision of information for grant proposals and grant reporting.
* Coordinate annual events that promote resident involvement in the community and that raise the profile of MPDC, such as the annual Youth Day, National Night Out, etc.
* Conduct needs assessments for community youth on an ongoing basis in order to initiate appropriate programming, such as summer jobs coordination.
* Work with local businesses, tenant committees and other non-profits to augment participation in annual and other MPDC-sponsored events and activities.
* Conduct outreach to recruit new participants for MPDC's loan program for new homeowners. Enroll participants in initial training, and monitor selected finalists through the qualification process to ensure ongoing eligibility and to provide assistance.
* Represent MPDC at neighborhood meetings, coalition groups and other events as requested.
* Participate in RoxVote coalition activities designed to increase voter awareness and participation in local, state and federal elections.
Additional Qualifications:
* At least two years' prior experience in community organizing; preferably experience in youth development and public safety organizing.
* Fluency in Spanish and English.
* Knowledge of the Roxbury neighborhood.
* Experience working with resident and neighborhood associations.
* Experience organizing in low-income, diverse communities.
* Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
