Description:
The Vera Institute of Justice is a private, non-profit organization that combines expertise in research, demonstration projects, and technical assistance to help leaders in government and civil society improve the systems people rely on for justice and safety.
Vera seeks a person with a strong interest in criminal and social justice policy, development and non-profit management, to serve as a special assistant. The special assistant will work closely with the vice president & chief program officer (VP/CPO) and the director of development (DD) to perform a variety of tasks. He or she will be supervised by VP/CPO. Specific responsibilities include helping the VP/CPO and DD carry out their daily responsibilities overseeing Vera’s programmatic and development activities. It also includes researching, writing and reporting on substantive, program and development issues, such as the drafting of proposals and preparing of reports to funders, creating materials for Vera programs to assist in their fundraising, and creating and managing institute-wide resources, such as contact databases and proposal libraries. The special assistant will be responsible for creating and managing Vera events for external and internal audiences. In addition, the special assistant will perform various administrative tasks such as scheduling meetings, planning travel, managing files, drafting correspondence.
Responsibilities
The special assistant will work closely with the VP/CPO and DD to fulfill the following responsibilities:
• Assist the VP/CPO as he oversees Vera’s centers and programs, including oversight of personnel, budgets, expenses and substantive policy and program development.
• Assist the DD as he supervises Vera’s development efforts, including relationships with trustees and other major donors, organizing events and maintaining the donor database.
• Assist with fundraising, including the drafting of grant proposals and concept papers for the institute as a whole as well as for specific programs.
• Develop and manage institute-wide development resources, including a funding proposal bank, contact databases and examples of model proposals.
• Develop and manage Vera events for internal and external audiences, including Vera’s annual benefit gala, flagship justice address and smaller events throughout the year.
• Conduct and disseminate research, through written, electronic and oral means – both on policy and program issues as well as on private and public funders – to the VP/CPO, DD and other Vera managers and staff.
• Track, analyze and report on private and public funding streams for existing and prospective Vera funders.
• Develop progress reports, presentations and materials for the VP/CPO and DD and for external audiences, including policy makers, government officials and funders.
• Manage Vera’s database of development contacts.
• Update development-related content on Vera’s website.
• Field requests for information.
• Travel outside New York City on occasion.
• Assist on other projects as needed.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree.
• At least 3 years of prior professional experience.
• Demonstrated interest in or knowledge of policy development, government or criminal/social justice.
• Development experience.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, initiative and drive to learn.
• Excellent writing and editing skills and the ability to write for different audiences.
• Proven superior research abilities.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint.
• Proficiency with development software, and contact database software.
• Exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Prior administrative assistant experience with technology competence preferred.
