Description:
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)/Adult Basic Education (ABE/GED Prep) classes: Each year, more than 2,000 immigrants and refugees from the Caribbean, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa attend CAMBA’s ESL and ABE/GED Prep classes, where they receive educational and case management services to help them cope with life in New York City. Classes are offered both to students who do not know English and to those who want to improve their speaking, reading, writing, math, and test-taking skills. Classes are also contextualized to address issues such as employment and family literacy. Civics Classes: CAMBA’s Civics Classes in American history, government and other relevant topics help more than 200 foreign-born individuals annually qualify for U.S. citizenship.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The person filling this position is expected, under general direction, to: (1) research and develop instructional materials and lesson plans; and, (2) instruct adults in academic and/or nonacademic subjects; including the following:
Research new materials and methods of instruction to keep curriculum current and relevant.
Design daily lesson plans to meet core course objectives.
Personally assess each student's level of ability to ensure appropriate placement.
Prepare and distribute instructional materials for classroom/homework use.
Provide classroom instruction on the subject of the course.
Manage the classroom effectively to maximize student learning.
Review at-home assignments in class.
Prepare, distribute, and grade periodic written assessments of student's progress.
Communicate with CAMBA case managers regarding apparent barriers to student success (e.g., child daycare needs, possible health/housing issues, etc.).
Refer students to other CAMBA services to assist students in eliminating barriers to success.
Maintain daily student attendance records.
Prepare reports on students’ attendance and progress, as required.
Maintain and update students' learning portfolios.
Coordinate with CAMBA case managers regarding next steps in student's progress toward their goals.
Additional Qualifications:
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Bachelor's degree (B.A.) and one year of applicable experience and/or equivalent experience.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Familiarity with the whole language and Freirian methodology or with 'at-risk" and ethnically-diverse populations
Must obtain Dept. of Health, Dept. of Education fingerprint clearance; doctor's note certifying good health; proof of negative results from TB test; and State Central Registry (SCR) clearance.
Ability to maintain State Central Registry (SCR) clearance and fingerprint clearance throughout the duration of employment.
Ability to adapt to the culture and environment of a public school.
