Description:

Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) mobilizes health professionals to advance health, dignity, and justice and promotes the right to health for all. Harnessing the specialized skills, rigor, and passion of doctors, nurses, public health specialists, and scientists, PHR investigates human rights abuses and works to stop them. As a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, PHR shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize.

PHR seeks an experienced grant writing professional to write grants and reports and foster foundation relations. Work with development and program staff to assure plans and systems are in place to produce required grant applications and reporting under tight and simultaneous deadlines. This position will proactively gather information from many sources and individuals to compile necessary information related to over a dozen varied and complex programs.

This is a challenging and new position that is available immediately. It will be based in our Cambridge, MA office and has the potential for some flexibility in hours for the right candidate. Reports to the Senior Foundation Relations Officer.

Responsibilities include:

• In collaboration with program and finance staff, write and submit on a timely basis compelling grant proposals and reports, including budget development.
• Develop, maintain and cultivate relationships with foundation staff.
• Coordinate all aspects of the grants management process, including tracking progress of grant proposals, schedules of required reports, responding to foundation representatives’ questions and conducting the required follow up necessary to secure grants,.
• Work collaboratively with the Senior Foundation Relations Officer to conduct prospect research, write and/or edit grant proposals and reports, cover letters, briefings, talking points and related material as needed to support fundraising strategies.
• Assist the Development department and Deputy Director with grant-related and other activities.

Additional Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required; a master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum of five years experience in foundation development and grant writing with a proven track record of success in securing grants from foundations, preferably for advocacy or cause-related organizations.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a challenging, fast-paced, diverse and demanding environment with constantly changing priorities due to newly emerging opportunities.
• Highly detail-oriented and organized with superior research, writing, editing and oral communication skills is essential.
• Ability to successfully manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work well on deadline.
• Knowledge of fundraising principles relative to foundations and other institutional funders; experience with government grant requirements preferred.
• Excellent computer skills required; development and donor prospect management tracking software experience preferred.
• Experience and/or interest in human rights fundraising highly preferred.
