Founded in 1970, Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) is a pioneering, non-profit, community-based organization that works to enhance the quality of life for children and families in some of New York City's most devastated neighborhoods. HCZ’s 17 centers serve more than 13,000 children and adults, including over 10,000 at-risk children. The emphasis of HCZ’s work is not just on education, social service and recreation, but on rebuilding the very fabric of community life.


Position Summary
HCZ is seeking Student Advocates to work as part of a comprehensive arts, media, and academic-based youth development program for high school students. Student Advocate will be responsible for monitoring the academic progress of each student in his/her caseload through regular contact and collaboration with student and school staff and the development of individual academic plans. The Student Advocate must be able to communicate effectively with students while remaining professional.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Bi-weekly distribution and review of progress reports
• Bi-weekly 1-on-1 meetings with students
• Motivating and maintaining the interest of the students while setting an example in all areas, including time and attendance.
• Serves as an advocate for each student in his/her caseload, working to encourage each individual’s academic success.
• Performs other duties assigned

Additional Qualifications:

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements:
• Ideal candidate has Bachelor’s degree or is attending college
• Knowledge of New York City school system
• Must have at least one year of experience tutoring/teaching teenagers
• Ability to be patient and well organized as well as dedicated to our students’ success and focused on the mission of our organization
• Ability to motivate and maintain the interest of the students while setting an example in all areas, including time and attendance
• Ability to work 28 hours per week
