Description:

Earn College Credits This Summer While You Earn Money!

Harriman Lodge and Camp Anne are residential camps in New York State that offer summer programs to adults and children with developmental disabilities. We are looking for creative staff members who are willing to share their ideas and invest their time and energy in one of our summer programs.

We are now offering a great opportunity for you to earn potential college credits while working as a summer camp counselor. The National Program on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction (National PONSI) is evaluating a course titled “A Multi-Disciplinary Introduction to Developmental Disabilities” that will be offered at the camps this summer. We have received provisional credit recommendation of 6 semester hours of undergraduate credit for this course, to be awarded to students who complete it successfully. National PONSI is an educational advisory service that evaluates courses offered by noncollegiate organizations, such as AHRC, and makes recommendations on their credit worthiness which colleges use as a guide in awarding credit.

The course could be credited in one of the following disciplines: Education, Special Education, Educational Psychology, Physical Education, Outdoor Recreation and Therapeutic Recreation. The unique combination of course work and field experience in a supportive, supervised setting will provide you with an amazing summer and be a wonderful addition to your resume. Additionally, most colleges who will accept these credits only charge a minimal processing fee for transferring credits so it can be a significant cost savings. These credit recommendations can also allow you to take a lighter course load during a future semester.

If this sounds like something you are interested in, here’s what you need to do:

1. First, notify us of your interest. Please apply online via our web site for one of the camp positions.

2. Next, notify your college of your interest. The procedure for obtaining approval varies from college to college – you may wish to speak with your advisor, professor or department chair. However, it is probably best to begin with the Registrar’s Office and ask to speak with the person in charge of Transfer Credit Evaluation. The Registrar’s office will most likely provide you with a form that you will use to obtain approval from your home department, although in some cases, the decision will be made right in the Registrar’s office.

3. Other helpful things to know - we would need you to arrive at camp by early June 2010. Staff training begins approximately ten days later. The course finishes for the summer by mid-August and your employment at the camps will end during the week of August 23rd.

The counselor salary for the summer for those taking this course will be $2200 as well as room and board. The cost of the textbooks and other material fees are included.
