Description:

The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy seeks a full time non-exempt Education Program Coordinator to assist the current Outdoor Education Director in the implementation of the Green and Grow Program, a year round workforce development program. Fifty percent of the position is spent assisting in supervising and supporting the team of teen apprentices and interns (17-20 years of age).

In addition to providing general support for the Green and Grow program, the education coordinator will develop and execute educational programs in environmental sciences, urban history, urban planning and horticulture using the history of the Big Dig and the evolution of the Greenway as a case study for teaching. Programs will be developed with input from multiple departments of the Conservancy and content will evolve as pilot programs are executed. The audiences for the programs are diverse and multicultural communities including schools, community groups, and the general public.

Working with the Director of Public Programs and the Outdoor Education Director, the coordinator will develop a full portfolio of educational programs. Programs will range from group tours and activities for middle school students, to horticultural and garden talks and tours for the general public, to curriculum based experiential learning activities on the Greenway for middle and high school age students.

The work schedule for this position is Tuesday through Saturday year round.

Responsibilities:

Green and Grow
o Provide supervision and support for the Green and Grow apprentices.
o Coordinate program trainings, meetings, orientations, site visits.
o Complete program processing including data management and budgets.
o Organize and co-lead field trips.
o Develop outreach strategy to market programs and recruit participants.
o Other duties as assigned.
Educational programs
o Aid Outdoor Education Director and Director of Public Programs in general oversight, coordination, implementation, evaluation and development of educational programs for multiple audiences.
o Provide research to aid in the delivery of the overall education programs.
o Develop an assessment strategy for measuring results and evaluating program elements.

Additional Qualifications:

Education
o BA or BS, preferably in biology, earth science, environmental studies or science education a minimum.
o Must be at least 21 years of age.

Experience
o Direct experience in developing inquiry-based education activities in formal and / or informal settings, and demonstrated ability to develop curriculum aligned to city and state standards.
o Minimum two years’ experience working with and positively motivating urban teens.
o Previous experience as an educator with demonstrated experience coordinating youth programs for middle school and high school age youth.

Knowledge and skills

o Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work cooperatively and independently required.
o Demonstrated ability to promote and respect diversity of ethnic, cultural, linguistic backgrounds.
o Demonstrated interpersonal skills and commitment to helping others grow in understanding of and concern for the environment and people’s relationship to it.
o Fluency in English/Spanish (or other language) desirable.
o Ability to lead walks, manage young adults, current first aid/CPR, and a valid driver’s license.
o Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
o Familiarity with the neighborhoods of Boston helpful.
