Description:

New Jersey Citizen Action (NJCA), the state’s largest, independent citizen watchdog coalition, has an immediate opening for a Health Care Organizer to work on both state and national health care reform campaigns: NJ For Health Care and Health Care For America Now.

Background: We are in the midst of a monumental battle over the future of our nation’s health care system. Right now, Congress is debating comprehensive national health care reform to provide universal, quality, affordable health care to all. Proposed national legislation represents the most significant domestic policy reform since the passage of Medicare – affecting one sixth of the U.S. gross domestic product and the lives of millions of American citizens. On the state level, New Jersey’s political leaders are poised to move forward on broad-based health care reform initiatives to improve access to quality, affordable health care for all state residents.

NJCA’s Health Care Organizer will work to grow and strengthen a statewide consumer health advocacy network and mobilize the financial and organizational resources to build the capacity we need to ensure that reforms are developed and implemented to serve and protect the interests of health care consumers. Our task is to plan and implement a strategy, create the political environment, and assemble the political and organizational resources that will overcome the formidable array of forces opposing fundamental change both in New Jersey and nationally. Our goal is to build and strengthen our statewide capacity to create a movement to win the implementation of health care reform at the state and national level.

The Health Care Organizer will also serve as one of NJCA’s Regional Organizers and will work on other issue campaigns NJCA is engaged in, including, but not limited to: campaign finance reform, telecommunication and energy prices, fair banking and community reinvestment, affordable insurance rates, a safe environment, and the rights of workers, victims, and consumers. Additionally, Organizers engage in voter registration drives and electoral work.

The Health Care Organizer will:

Organize low- and moderate-income citizens, members, affiliated organizations, and allies, to join NJ For Health Care and Health Care For America Now.

Formulate and execute strategy and tactics with guidance from the Health Care Campaign Coordinator as well as the Executive, Program, and Political Directors.

Develop expertise on state and national health care reform, research and produce campaign materials.

Build a broad coalition of organizations and individuals to participate in campaign activities.

Promote the campaign principles within the State Legislature and Congress.

Maintain relationship with press and represent NJCA at public events.

Assist in the overall operations of the program and the organization.

Additional Qualifications:

Minimum of two years’ experience in community, student, labor, tenant, church, and/or political organizing; excellent writing, computer, and telephone skills; car, license and insurance required

The Health Care Organizer will be based in either NJCA’s Highland Park Office OR Newark Office. Bi-lingual in English and Spanish a plus.
