Description:
The Women's Studies Research Center (WSRC) at Brandeis University is looking for a Curator & Arts Coordinator. This person will direct the arts program at the Women's Studies Research Center and curate all WSRC exhibitions. She/he will carry out collections management activities and develop and direct arts related educational programs and events that engage students, faculty, staff, and the public. The candidate will also identify public relations opportunities for the WSRC Arts Program as well as produce marketing materials and community partnerships.
Job Functions:
- Oversees the Visual Arts Program at the Women¿s Studies Research Center by advising founding director on the overall strategy for development of the Arts program. Curates all exhibitions, from conception to completion, for the only activist/feminist, museum-quality art gallery in New England, with attention to maintaining the integrity of the WSRC mission. Responsible for all exhibition-related research, writing, publications, exhibition design, and coordinating installation logistics, including reviewing proposals, conducting studio and/or gallery visits, selection of artwork, managing production of catalogs and other didactic texts, exhibition layout, and scheduling and supervising installation crew. Oversees Exhibitions Committee, comprised of WSRC scholars.
- Oversees development and implementation of educational programming for the public, linking exhibition themes to the scholarly research at WSRC and throughout campus, using the art as a vehicle through which to promote dialogue. Supervises scholars and artists who participate in these programs. Develops content for and lead group tours of the gallery (Brandeis staff, school children, etc.). Promotes inter- and intra-university collaborations through programming. Links exhibition and program themes to Brandeis courses and academic programs, to increase student involvement and integrate the Arts Program into the university's core mission.
- Conducts marketing of exhibitions and programming including writing press releases and producing print materials. Works directly with media, pitching stories and conducting interviews. Markets the programs and build audience on- and off-campus through direct mail, advertisements, targeted emails, brochures, and websites.
Qualifications
This position requires the ability to demonstrate creative thinking and show sensitivity to the needs, attitudes, and situations of volunteers, staff, scholars, and donors. 2+ years of a combination of curatorial, registrar, exhibition installation/preparation, programming, and/or marketing experience is required. Must be able to build and maintain relationships while earning the respect of Senior officers of the college. Must demonstrate strong communication, research, writing, presentation, and project management skills. Rich knowledge of marketing and organizational branding as well as print and online communications opportunities. Strong foundation in audience development, program design, and event planning. Must possess the ability to articulate the mission of the WSRC and Brandeis University. Advanced knowledge of word, excel, and Powerpoint, design programs, and budget analysis preferred.
