The mission of Phoenix Academy Charter School is to close the achievement gap that exists between academically underperforming teenagers and their academically successful peers.
Our students come to PCA with little health education, and few medical resources. Part of our mission is to help our students to learn to make healthy decisions about their physical and mental development. Our nurse will be an integral part of this part of our students’ education.
Primary Responsibilities:
-Oversee student medical needs, including the dispensation of medication.
-Work with the Special Education Administrator on the management of Independent Education Plan-related health needs.
-Maintain student medical records, including immunizations.
-Review plans for addressing the medical needs of the children at the PCA Childcare Development Center.
-Develop and use an active network of referral services to support students in making healthy decisions about their physical heath.
-Communicate with parents/guardians as necessary.
-Work with students on Preventative Health Measures:
-Teach a Health Class each quarter. The course will meet twice a week for 60 minutes, and can be enhanced with guest speakers, media presentations and an adolescent health curriculum. The focus of the course will be healthy decision-making, addressing such topics as nutrition and exercise, the affects of smoking, drugs and alcohol on the body, and sex, sexuality and reproduction.
-If interested, it may also be possible to run groups for students with particular health issues: smoking cessation, drug and alcohol abuse, pregnancy and birth, infant and toddler health, etc.
