Description:
Program Name: West Farms Beacon
Qualifications:
The candidate must have a B.A. degree or certification in applicable area of interest. Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as strong classroom management skills; and experience developing and implementing curricula for middle-school youth.
Primary Function:
As part of the after-school team, part-time activity specialists provide focused lessons in their area of expertise to students enrolled in the Phipps after-school program. Specialists work closely with participants to encourage movement, creativity and develop skills in the aforementioned activity.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement project based lesson plans and activities in area of expertise that enrich academic learning, foster personal development and leadership skills of middle-school youth
• Provide opportunities to showcase work and develop artistic potential
• Partner with outside agencies and cultural institutions to expand programming and plan trips
• Maintain accurate participant attendance, activity and sign-out records
• Document student progress
• Establish a comfortable learning environment and implement clear, consistent age-appropriate expectations and rules
• Model appropriate child development practices
• Uphold program policies and procedures and proper use of supplies and materials
• Maintain classroom cleanliness and organization
• Maintain ongoing open communication with parents and day school teachers
• Attend staff meetings, professional development workshops and program events
• Communicate with all staff, parents, children and community members in a polite and respectful manner so as to represent the program in a professional way
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director
Desired Qualifications:
• Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus
• Previous work experience in a school age setting strongly desired
Additional information:
All Activity Specialists must be fingerprinted and proven to be free of any criminal convictions before being hired.
As required by the Department of Health all staff must complete a physical exam and TB test.
