Mission:

"The Upper Room provides and facilitates programs which promote the social, spritual, educational, economic and physical well-being of its neighbors.

Our mantra is 'Education for Life'"

This summer, accomplish something of real value by contributing to the lives of the children of Kansas City. The Upper Room of Kansas City, located at Swope Parkway and 59th Street, is a nonprofit organization that addresses educational equity in inner city Kansas City. Specifically, each summer, the Upper Room runs a summer reading program that serves almost 2,000 children within the kindergarten to eighth grade age group, with the majority of children falling within the kindergarten to third grade age group. In a district where reading proficiency scores fall consistently below those of neighboring districts, children who participate in the Upper Room’s reading program consistently read as high as two grade levels above their peers.

The program will run from June 15th to August 7th, and each day from 8am to 12pm. Children in the program benefit from one on one work with volunteers like you. Volunteers can also accompany the children on enrichment activities in the afternoons. Working at the Upper Room is a great volunteer experience. It is a structured, fun environment, at which students from many area high schools volunteer daily. For more information contact the volunteer coordinator at UpperRoomCoordinator@gmail.com.
