Mission:
The Epilepsy Foundation of Massachusetts & Rhode Island (EFMRI) has been working since 1983 to help people living with epilepsy. Our mission is to ensure that people with seizures are able to participate in all life experiences and to work toward prevention, control and a cure for epilepsy through advocacy, education, research and support services.
Information & Referral-Responding to more than 700 inquires a month, this service provides people with epilepsy, and their families care providers and the general public with accurate information and referrals to appropriate services.
Parent & Family Support Network- Provides parents, siblings and other family members opportunities to network through regional PFSN meetings, educational programs and social gatherings. With more than 900 participating families, EFMRI currently has the largest and most active PFSN of any epilepsy program nationwide.
Women & Epilepsy Initiative (WEI)-Hormonal Influences, pregnancy, parenting and aging are unique concerns of women with epilepsy. WEI provides production and distribution of fact sheets for both women and medical care providers, support groups, peer-to-peer networks and educational programs. EFMRI was the first epilepsy affiliate to offer this unique program and currently has more than 850 women participating.
Supporting Informational Groups-Provides local community access to educational programs and peer-to-peer networking.
Scholarships-EFMRI was the first group of offer financial assistance to students with epilepsy continuing their education or vocational training. EFMRI has provided over $50,000 in scholarship.
Camp Wee-Kan-Tu-The first weekend long over night camp in New England solely for children with epilepsy. For the past four years the camp has provided a unique camping experience for more than 50 children each year. The camp has a 24-hour medical staff comprised of neurologists and nurses who donate their services to this wonderful program.
H.O.P.E (Helping other people with epilepsy)-This program offers people with epilepsy and family member’s trained volunteer speakers to meet with school, hospitals, senior citizens groups, and community groups.
