Mission:

Our mission at Computers for Youth (CFY) is to help low-income children do better in school by improving their learning environment at home. CFY works directly with middle schools in several major metropolitan areas to:

● Enhance the educational resources available in children's homes. CFY's computer-based home learning centers are designed by software experts and tested by students and education executives from around the country.

● Improve parent-child interaction around learning at home. CFY's workshops improve parents' confidence in helping their children learn. Our home learning centers allow parents to engage their children with schoolwork even if they do not have the academic background. CFY turns “family time” into “learning time.”

● Help teachers connect classroom learning with the home. CFY's program works with principals to set school-wide goals and trains teachers to create powerful links to at-home learning.

During the past ten years, CFY-New York City has expanded from serving 230 families per year in the Bronx to serving 2,400 families per year across the city, becoming one of the largest non-profits of its kind.

CFY-New York City partners with NYC low-income public middle schools, through our Take IT Home program, to offer a free computer-based home learning center to every sixth grade student and their family. We load the computers with a Microsoft Office, educational software designed to engage children in Math, English, Social Studies and Science, and free technical support for the life of the computer. Both students and their parents are required to attend a half day of training that teaches them how to use their home learning center.
