Mission:
We are a 501(c)(3) charity based in Davidson, North Carolina, with operations in Nepal. Nepal Orphans Home attends to the welfare of children in Nepal who are orphaned, abandoned, or not supported by their parents. Papa's House provides for the children's basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing, as well as their education and health care, and administers to their emotional needs with love and compassion. Papa's House allows children to grow up in a nurturing environment. The mission of Nepal Orphans Home is not just to rescue children from abject poverty, but to enable the children to develop and realize their potentials.
Programs
Now in its fifth year, Nepal Orphans Home (NOH) operates three homes in Dhapasi, in the Kathmandu valley: Papa's Samanjasya (Harmony) House for 48 girls, including 13 former Kamlaris or indentured child laborers; Papa's Kalpana (Imagine) House, just opened in 2009, with 29 former Kamlari girls; and Papa's Sambhav (Possibilities) House, for 25 boys. The children range in age from five to eighteen. NOH also supports a fourth home, known as the Lawajuni (New Life) House, for 30 former Kamlari girls, in Narti, in the Dang district of western Nepal.
In addition to the four children's homes, NOH supports two village schools in the Ramechhap district, the Shree Sham primary school in Dumrikharka and the Mudkeswori primary school in Votetar, where we fund hot lunch programs and contribute to the teacher salaries and school supplies.
An active volunteer program draws talented, compassionate people of all ages from around the world. In 2008 there were over 50 volunteers from a dozen countries who served through NOH's Volunteer Nepal. For example, in the fall of 2008 NOH began collaborating with the Foundation for Sustainable Technologies (FoST), a nongovernmental organization in Nepal. Two enterprising NOH volunteers initiated a project in Dumrikharka that should dramatically improve the health and livelihoods of the villagers. To decrease the dependence on wood as a cooking fuel and improve household indoor air quality, the NOH volunteers introduced briquette stoves produced by FoST and taught some of the villagers how to make briquettes out of scrap paper and local natural materials.
