Mission:
The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to increasing the number of highly qualified teachers available to schools around the country. Partially funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the American Board offers the Passport to Teaching and Distinguished Teacher certification programs.
Passport to Teaching is a premier national route to teacher certification for career changers and other individuals interested in joining the teaching profession. All candidates for Passport to Teaching certification must hold a bachelor’s degree and demonstrate mastery on rigorous examinations of subject area and professional teaching knowledge. Prior to earning certification, candidates must also pass a federal background check.
The American Board is currently developing a Master Teacher certification, which recognizes experienced teachers of high merit and proven effectiveness.
