Description:

The Women Empowerment Institute Cameroon -WEICAM was founded on the 30th May 2006, and recognized by the government of Cameroon with registration number NW/GP/30/06/10066 of the 30th June 2006. WEICAM is a non profit organization located in the North West Province of Cameroon, that aims at promoting women’s rights and empowering the women folk and men as well with the vision of tapping into their respective potentials in the interest of improving on not only their livelihood but also in the interest of the integral development of society.

Mission
The mission of WEICAM is to promote women’s human rights, put more women in leadership positions and involve women in economic activities that will reduce poverty in their communities. Our programs generally aim at promoting gender equality by enabling participants to come out of a tradition of inequality and male chauvinism that has relegated women to the background. Most of the tribes of the Republic of Cameroon have common traditional practices, which are quite oppressive to women. These traditional practices often relegate women to the background, abuse women’s rights and always put them second place in the social ladder thereby promoting gender inequality. Closing the gap between men and women in terms of capacities, access to resources and opportunities is becoming an urgent need on a day to day basis. The Women Empowerment Institute Cameroon therefore seeks to make the situation of the rural woman different through:

Legal advice
Education and training
Advocacy and lobbying
Capacity building
Language and computer literacy
Research

WEICAM would need volunteers to execute and get involved in these programs. Please for any inquiries do contact the Executive Director Geraldine Chin at 237 75 80 25 23 or by email at geragoddy@yahoo.co.uk. or at womemins_wei@yahoo.com
