Description:
As a CHES-certified professional with an advanced degree in health education, I possess outstanding interpersonal and presentation skills, a strong capacity for program development, and an extensive knowledge of physiology and a variety of health-related issues. These qualities, when combined with an empathy-based approach to health counseling that emphasizes personal empowerment through proactive health management and positive choices, make me the ideal Health Educator.
In my previous positions, I was the Health Outreach Coordinator for Community Medical and Dental Care, where responsibilities include conducting community need assessments, developing outreach programs, and promoting program and facility use through education and the media. I have cultivated excellent relationships with organizations throughout Rockland County and have arranged presentations on various health-related topics for schools and senior citizen centers.
I hold a master’s degree in health education from Teacher’s College at Columbia University and a Bachelor of science degree in health science from the University of New York College at Cortland. While earning my bachelor degree, I interned at the Department of Health in Rockland County, implementing campaigns such as the “Just Ask Us, We Bake, Broil, or Grill” to promote healthy food choices and working closely with the “STEPS to a Healthier NY” staff to provide education and program promotion for diabetes, nutrition, physical activity, substance abuse, tobacco cessation, disease management, and obesity / weight-related issues. As a STEPS volunteer, I delivered presentations on children and asthma in support of the “Steps to Better Breathing” campaign and providing additional education and BMI assessments for the “Got Milk?” campaign. My academic practices at Columbia and Cortland, along with my work experiences have made me well rounded in health, wellness and education; yet also in understanding the ongoing learning that is required to be efficient in the fields of education and health promotion.
I am a very empathetic, open-minded, compassionate, inspirational, and motivational person. My experiences have taught me the importance of empathy, which is deeply rooted within and will always be a quality I consider essential to include in guidance and care-giving. Choosing a career that I am passionate about is one of the most important things that I have anticipated for my future.
I thrive on new challenges and my innovative approach to systems and improvements, along with my desire to learn, will forever prove myself as an asset to any organization I am involved with.
Some key competencies include:
-Additional screening / counseling experience for Health Fitness Corporation, NYC.
-An aptitude for effectively interacting with children and adults from diverse populations, both one-on-one and in presentation / workshop environments.
-Excellent analytical skills; conduct and evaluate informational research and capitalize on opportunities for program and system improvement.
-Educational material design with technological proficiency that includes MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Works, Adobe Acrobat, and Outlook.
