Description:
The teacher position will work in a local school to teach English to children of various ages. Volunteers with teaching experience/training will be able to work with minimal supervision however there will be on-hand support at all times. Volunteers with little experience will be able to act as teaching assistants for local teachers. The schools are located in small rural villages where people speak native languages such as Maasai, Chaaga and Swahili however lessons are taught in English. Text books and a teacher’s manual can be available but resources are limited and volunteers should expect to assist in developing teaching plans and be creative with the resources available.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Teaching qualification (including TEFL) would be an advantage but not essential, fluent English skills, patience, good with children, self-motivated, creative and willingness to learn.
LOCATION OF THE PROGRAM
The program is located at Maragwa approximately 70 kilometers north of Nairobi – central Kenya however volunteers will be able to visit other projects in other parts of Kenya.
DURATION OF THE PROGRAM
The duration depends on the volunteer’s availability and travel arrangements. We recommend that volunteers stay 3 months to fully experience Kenyan life and to have an impact upon the community however volunteers are welcome for any period. For volunteers wanting to travel, we are able to assist with providing information.
PROGRAM FEE
US$90 per week payable prior or at the start of the placement.
