Description:
The Foundation for International Medical Relief, in partnership with the Arlington Academy of Hope, is pleased to announce volunteer opportunities at our site in the village of Bumwalukani, Uganda!
Our clinic serves the basic medical needs of children from both the surrounding community and a nearby orphanage.
Standing at the foot of Mount Elgon, 150 miles east of the bustling capital city of Kampala, which, according to the Ministry of Health, has the highest prevalence of HIV infection in Uganda, the dispersed rural community around the clinic is comprised of approximately 10,000 to 15,000 inhabitants with an average annual income of $200. The most rampant medical issues plaguing this population are readily treatable with preventative measures, education initiatives and continuous healthcare monitoring, all of which you will help provide. Through the joint efforts of AAH and FIMRC, the clinic will play a central role in providing long term primary medical care to the entire community of Bumwalukani.
FIMRC's Global Health Volunteer Program is open to volunteers of all ages and educational or professional backgrounds. The medically focused nature of our programs makes us especially appealing to medical students and professionals, but non-medical volunteers will find a wealth of opportunities to make a difference! We have hosted everyone from college students taking an alternative spring break to medical professionals with decades of experience.
Project Bumwalukani offers direct service experience in a small clinic in a remote African setting. As a volunteer you will work side-by-side with our dedicated staff to provide the basic services so severely lacking in this region. You will not be placed in a large group to perform mundane or low-impact tasks; instead, your unique skills and knowledge will be put to work and you will be valued as an individual. We will work with you to ensure that you will provide real change to some of Uganda’s most medically underserved youth. More program information is available on our website; please do not hesitate to find out more!
Every volunteer who has passed through the doors of our clinic has made a direct, tangible difference in the lives of Ugandan children! Our clinic is currently the only medical resource available to the children of Bumwalukani, so your work with us will truly save lives! Due to the personalized nature of our volunteer program, we only have spots for 8 volunteers at one time. Be sure to apply well enough in advance, because these spots disappear very fast.
FIMRC’s goals for this project are simple: staff the clinic on AAH’s grounds with medical professionals, as well as endow it with supplies in order to operate as a complete medical facility. Through the joint efforts of AAH and FIMRC, the clinic will play a central role in providing long term primary medical care to the entire community of Bumwalukani.
The costs for a two-week trip are as follows:
Program donation: $649 ($275 for each additional week past a two-week trip)
In-country transportation: $337 (8 hours by private hired car from airport to clinic site; cost shown is for roundtrip travel)
Accommodations: $280 ($20 per day; includes housing in the FIMRC/AAH Guesthouse and three meals daily plus break tea)
