YMCA Community Development Advisory Board
FY 08/09 Community Development Program Plan



Mandate: The YMCA Community Development Board will provide expertise, best practices, partnerships, program innovation, and funding to promote community prosperity.

Governance: The YMCA of the Greater Houston Area is one corporation, with a governing board responsible to the membership for the total association. The by-laws of the YMCA allow the board of directors to establish centers in order to serve the various communities in the YMCA’s service area. The association board of directors delegates responsibility for the operations of the centers to center boards. Center boards are responsible to the board of directors. The YMCA Community Development Advisory Board is equivalent to a Center Board.

Board Structure: Twenty-five members recruited and nominated by the board development committee. Committees: Board Development, Executive, Fund Development, R&D (Program), Finance, Procurement (In-kind donations), Volunteer Experience Technology, Site Selection, Partnership Development, and Public Relations.

Financial accountability: Budget of approximately $500,000

Partners Goal: $15,000

Programs: Financial Literacy, Tax Preparation Help, Youth Asset Development, and Adult Learning.

Client base: 12 Bridge Center and Northwest YMCA – Caring Community Center

Goals :
1. Develop a range of programs for children, teens, and young adults which build assets for life-long success and civic responsibility.
2. Provide holistic programs that promote healthy living through education and opportunities for physical activity for all.
3. Assist families with programs designed to improve money management and other life skills.
4. Create partnerships of support through strategic alliances that enhance our capacity to serve youth, families, and communities.
5. Design and implement a business model that sustains and expands community development.

3000 youth participants
720 adult participants

TAX PREPARATION HELP

3000 returns

CARING COMMUNITY CENTER – G7

175 youth participating in asset development/academic achievement.
100 drop-outs recaptured
175 youth participating in physical activities
575 youth participating in swimming activities (Water Wise)
700 families participating in health fairs and health screenings
700 residents participating in community building activity
1050 participants in personal safety, crime and fire prevention
700 youth participating in substance abuse prevention
350 parents participating in parenting/personal development workshops.
700 adults participating in ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages.
