Description:
Green River's Computer Reporting Technologies program trains court reporters and professionals who subtitle media for the deaf or hard of hearing. Volunteering with this program is a great way to gain insight on our criminal justice system (Law and Order fans encouraged to apply!). This volunteer opportunity is to read court testimony aloud aloud, playing the role of a witness, at varying speeds. Students will practice transcribing spoken testimony, and the instructor will play the role of the "questioner" (attorney or judge).
Requirements: Volunteers must be able to read English fluently and speak it in a strong, clear voice. Volunteers must also be able to speak English at a fast or slow speed to match students' skill levels. Volunteers should commit to helping for at least three months on a weekly basis, at one of the following days and times: Thursdays from 9 AM - noon (fast reading); Thursdays from 8 AM - noon (slow reading); or, Monday or Wednesday evenings from 5:30 - 8:30 (mixed speeds). Volunteer aid will not be required on holidays or between academic quarters.
