Nicaragua is a scenic country with a tumultuous past. The country has entered a period of stability, managing to minimize outside interference and become a truly self-governing nation. ELI works with our partner organization in the city of Granada, perhaps the most beautiful in Nicaragua. Granada is situated on Lake Nicaragua, 10th largest fresh water lake in the world, just a short distance form Costa Rica. Granada is steeped in colonial charm, and is a popular destination for tourists. But tourism is still a minor player in the Nicaraguan economy, so you won't find the t-shirt shops or stores hawking handicrafts that plague most great destinations. Instead, you'll find a quiet community that belongs very much to the locals.
Orphanage -- Volunteers who bring skills, creativity, experience, knowledge and understanding will find volunteering to be an incredibly rewarding sharing experience. You will help to create a friendly and safe environment for local Huérfanas (orphan girls) to help them overcome their traumas from physical and emotional abuses. Volunteers support local Nuns, nurses and care providers; tasks range from observation to assistance.
Accommodations -- Participants can stay with a local host family or in a volunteer house.
Start Dates & Program Duration -- The start dates for the Nicaragua programs are completely flexible. We ask that participants not arrive December 23-26 in order to allow our coordinator and his staff to spend the Christmas holiday with their families.
