Description:
Mexican Educational Foundation of New York (MexEd) is looking for mentors to work with Mexican youth in NYC.
MexEd is a non-profit organization that promotes educational attainment and community leadership among Mexican immigrants and their children. Currently, our primary means of achieving this mission is an after-school enrichment program based at Washington Irving High School, located near Union Square. In addition, program participants are matched with a caring, dedicated mentor who serves as an advocate and role model to their “mentee.”
A mentor can provide his/her mentee with:
-Academic support
-A positive role model
-A stable relationship with a compassionate adult
Description of volunteer position:
-Have a relationship with a student for at least one school year
-Get in touch with your mentee at least once a week, and spend at least 4 hours a month with your mentee
-Participate in both academic activities (e.g., helping with homework or the college application process) and social activities with your mentee
-Attend MexEd’s required orientations and special events
-Communicate with the mentorship program coordinator once a month about the status of your relationship with your mentee
