Description:
The Olancho Aid Foundation is seeking a qualified Reading Specialist to work at our bilingual primary school, Centro Escolar Santa Clara.
The Reading Specialist will act as a guide teacher for other teachers in the school building, providing workshops and answers to daily questions. We are seeking someone who is very familiar with school libraries and children's literature in general, and someone who will meet with individual students or small groups who are struggling with reading problems. The Reading Specialist will help to further train teachers and implement existing reading programs and serve as a link between the main office and the classrooms in the specific area of reading.
The Reading Specialist will also help our English-speaking Honduran teachers to effectively teach students how to read in English.
Minimum education required: BA in education; specialization in Reading K-6 or Reading K-12 preferred. Knowledge of "running records" and familiarity with programs like "DIBELS," "Reading Recovery" "Guided Reading" and "Guided Writing" required. Strong command of Spanish strongly preferred.
Required commitment of 10 months, which is a full school year. Dates needed are August 24, 2009 - end of June 2010. Stipend, housing, transportation and assistance with visas will be provided.
The Olancho Aid Foundation, Inc. is a faith-based organization that empowers Honduran youth to transform themselves, their communities and their country through education. From special needs to bilingual classrooms, our team of international volunteers and Hondurans are dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by providing an environment that stimulates intellectual and spiritual growth and fosters independent thinking.
