Founded in 1960 as a private college for academically talented students, New College became a public college in 1975 through a merger with the State University System of Florida. Today, as the state's independent honors college, New College of Florida retains its distinctive academic program and high standards, making it a college of choice for students who can manage the freedom and responsibility of designing their own education. The VISTA member will encourage students to be civic-minded and develop service-learning opportunities for students to address poverty issues in disadvantaged neighborhoods in Sarasota. The VISTA member will coordinate alternative break trips, and develop a database of service-learning opportunities to assist faculty and students in creating campus-community partnerships.

The FASS AmeriCorps*VISTA Initiative is a service program that aims to empower students through volunteerism and service-learning to create positive change in our communities. VISTA members earn benefits, including a living allowance, health insurance, student loan forbearance, and a $4,725 education award to apply toward tuition, student loans, or future graduate studies. Applicants from out of state are eligible for a relocation allowance.
