Description:

Marin County Open Space lands enhance our communities by allowing us a beautiful place to hike, run, ride and play. These preserves surround our homes and increase their value aesthetically and monetarily. They give to us personally and improve the quality of life in Marin. Volunteering is your opportunity to give back. Most preserves are located in the wild land urban interface. This means that they are right next door to you. As stewards of this land that makes us your neighbor. Please join us and your other neighbors in improving the land that we all own and enjoy.

We work with volunteers of all skill levels doing a variety of projects. Invasive removal is an area that we tend to focus on a lot with our volunteers removing French Broom, Scotch Broom, Pampas Grass, Ivy, Harding Grass, Ice Plant, and many others. In areas that the invasive species population has been curtailed, we focus on planting native species such as Coyote Bush, Marsh Gum Plant, and Sticky Monkey Flower.

How to Apply:

There are opportunities for everyone, no matter what your skill level or experience. We already have some established programs like the Trail Watch and Volunteer Mounted Patrol groups. These are similar to your neighborhood watch programs. These volunteers are our extra eyes and ears on the preserve. With over 15,000 acres spread out over 33 preserves we can definitely use the help. The Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) allows a volunteer to adopt an area, trail, archaeological feature or anything else that you can think of that you would like to protect or restore. The Peripatetic Environmental Preserve Stewards (PEPS) are dedicated to learning about and eradicating invasive plants. If you want to help out periodically, please join Rangers and a dedicated team of Volunteers on our Monthly Volunteer Days- usually the second weekend of the month. We do trail work, exotic plant removal, tree planting, cleanup and other hands-on restoration projects. This is a great opportunity to learn about the District and receive a great newsletter. Wear work clothes and shoes appropriate for the weather. The District will provide drinks, snacks, training, and tools.
